Nicole Benner’s recovery journey began in Somerdale near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where she grew up in a home shaped by trauma, abuse, and untreated mental health challenges. As a child, she witnessed her father’s severe mental health struggles and experienced anxiety and depression herself, though mental health was not openly acknowledged in her family. The expectation was to endure and move forward. As an adult, Nicole faced serious medical diagnoses that threatened her mobility, while also living in a volatile marriage where her young daughters were exposed to domestic violence. Determined to protect her health and break generational cycles, she made the difficult decision to leave and begin focusing on healing.
As a single mother, Nicole committed to working on herself both physically and mentally through therapy, self-education, and eventually support groups that helped her understand toxic family dynamics. Her lived experience led her into the behavioral health field, where she began in drug and alcohol services as a Peer Specialist and worked in warm handoff programs. After the loss of her son to addiction, she was forced to face her own grief while continuing her recovery journey. Today, Nicole serves in a supervisory role, expanding her impact by mentoring other Peer and Recovery Specialists. Her mission is to remind people that they are not alone, that support is available, and that healing is always possible.
