We believe no one should face mental health struggles alone. Peerstar provides trained peer specialists with lived experience navigating mental health challenges who can walk with you on your path to recovery.
If you ask the people we serve what Peerstar is, you won’t hear about our specialized services or evidence-based programs. Instead you’ll hear:
“They carried hope for me until I could carry it again.”
“She reminded me who I am.”
“She saved my life.”
“He has been my lifeline.”
“He helped me put myself back together one piece at a time.”
And that’s what Peerstar is all about.
WHO WE ARE
Peerstar exists for the spaces and situations in between—the gaps clinical care can’t always reach.
The everyday struggles at home. The days you’re not sure you can keep going. The gaps between treatment and daily life.
While therapists provide clinical insight and doctors prescribe medication, our peer specialists offer something equally vital: connection with someone who has lived experience navigating mental health challenges, and a walking reminder that recovery is possible.
2025 has been a year of progress, resilience, and purpose.
We strengthened staff culture, resulting in stronger performance and better outcome for our peers. We expanded our support, rejuvenating focus on skilled nursing and deepening relationships with courts from wellness initiatives. And we’ve increased access and connection to care — one peer, one connection, one community at a time.

OUR HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
In 2008, Dr. Larry Nulton saw something missing in mental health recovery.
When support comes from someone who's been where you are, recovery becomes not just possible, but within reach.
Dr. Larry Nulton
Founder, Peerstar
Clinical treatment was essential, but it wasn't enough. People leaving therapy offices and hospitals needed something more. They needed connection with someone who truly understood what they were going through, who'd walked the same road.
What started as a small, grassroots organization has grown into the state's largest dedicated peer support provider. But even as we've expanded across 35 counties and delivered over 750,000 peer-led engagements, the heart of what we do hasn't changed one bit: We show up.We stay. We don’t give up on people.

HOW WE SHOW UP
The principles that guide us
hope
We carry hope for the people we serve, especially when they can't carry it for themselves. Recovery is real, and we've seen it happen thousands of times.
AUTHENTICITY
Our specialists share their own stories when appropriate because vulnerability builds trust, and trust makes transformation possible.
RESPECT
Every person's journey is their own. We honor individual choices, cultural backgrounds, and the pace that feels right for each person.
PERSISTENCE
Recovery isn't linear. We understand setbacks, and we don't give up. We stay committed through the hard days and the breakthroughs.
EMPOWERMENT
We don't do the work for people. We walk alongside them, building skills and confidence until they can stand strong on their own.
HOLISTIC CARE
Mental health doesn't exist in isolation. We address the whole person and the whole life they're building.

OWN WORDS
"All I saw was darkness. She showed me how to see the light."
I was in a really dark place and not doing well mentally. Michelle worked hard with me even when I didn't want the guidance. I wanted to give up and quit everything, but she would not let me. She saved my life. If she wasn't my peer I probably would not be here right now. All I saw was darkness. She showed me how to see the light and reminded me who I am.

"She helped me put myself back together one piece at a time."
I was completely broken and devastated. I laid on my couch for three months. Then along came Carol. She started helping me put myself back together one piece at a time. She picked me up when I was at the lowest point in my life. She taught me to see my self worth and how to be independent.

"Peer support means my freedom."
I can get out and go places and do things that my anxiety makes hard to do on my own. It has changed my life. It has shown me support and pushed me forward to better things. It gives me courage.
Michelle S.
"This service has been my lifeline."
They came into my life at a time where I was confused and a first time mother. I was struggling, my mental health was not what it is now, but peer support was there. They showed up. This service has been my lifeline when I felt I didn't have anyone to talk to.

"I wouldn't be where I'm at today without her."
I was hesitant about participating. So thankful I chose to use this wonderful program. My support person has been there for me, a sounding board that can see things from a unique perspective. I wouldn't be where I'm at today without her.

"Meeting my peer support specialist was a life changing moment for me."
When I first met my peer support specialist Amy, I was homeless and staying in a shelter. Life felt really hard and I didn’t know how things were going to get better. My peer support specialist supported me and kept encouraging me when I felt stuck. With their support, I was able to get my own place and start getting things for my home. Now I’m working and doing better, and I’m really thankful someone was there to support me.

"My peer star really was giving me ways to feel good about myself."
During my time with Peerstar, I was going through a domestic abuse situation and had just left my home with my kids. I didn’t know how to start over and was worried that I was going to be alone. My peer star would come to my apartment during the week while my kids were at school and we would work on making sure I had my plan for the week. She would work on different tasks with me and even sit there while I called to make appointments. My peer star was good at making me know that I could do it on my own.

"Peerstar really did change my life."
I was a quiet kid, bullied, and spent most of my time alone. I didn’t drive or have a license and I was scared of going places. During my time with Kyle we worked on walking a lot and being in the community, starting really small. Kyle worked with me on studying for my permit and encouraging me to take the test, and we started going to places in the community and the drop in center. Making friends and feeling good about the stuff I am doing has been so great.
